The UK’s latest pharmaceutical research is on what can be called the ‘Viagra for men’ syndrome – the belief that erectile dysfunction drugs could be used to cure male sexual health problems.
A new study in the Lancet published today has shown that the drug, Viagra for men, can be used to help men overcome erectile dysfunction, and that some patients were also taking part in the study, suggesting that it could also be useful for some patients.
Researchers from the University of Aberdeen said the findings suggested that the use of erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra for men could help them to overcome the problem of erectile dysfunction.
They said Viagra for men would be able to help them to achieve and maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse.
But they pointed out that Viagra for men is not approved for use in the UK, and the research was not conducted in the UK at the time of publication.
They added that although the study was ‘preliminary’, it was not the first time the use of erectile dysfunction drugs in the UK has been shown to be beneficial for men.
The study, which looked at 50,000 men aged 50 and older with erectile dysfunction and normal or low blood pressure, found that 50% of men who took the drugs had an erection that lasted only five minutes and lasted for three hours. In contrast, men who took only 50mg of sildenafil, which is not approved for the UK market, had an erection lasting for six hours.
“We know that Viagra is a highly effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, but in the short-term it may not be as effective as you think. You are still at risk of a recurrence of the problem,” the researchers said.
They said the drugs were being studied and used as a way to ‘treat’ erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. They also suggested that it may be useful for some men who have other health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of heart problems.
They said that while Viagra is not a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, it could be useful for some patients who have had a heart attack before. The researchers added that their research was ‘under way’.
Professor Peter Lefkow, a professor of urology at Imperial College London, said: “We were delighted to find out that this is the first drug that can be used to treat the condition of erectile dysfunction. This means that in addition to helping men achieve and maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse, it may also help some men who have had other health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart problems.”
Viagra for men was originally developed to treat erectile dysfunction in men, and has been shown to be effective in some men.But it was not until 2003 that a UK study, published in the Lancet, showed that Viagra was effective in treating erectile dysfunction in men with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. A similar study showed that men who took sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) had a significantly higher success rate of achieving and maintaining an erection when compared to men who did not take Viagra.
Professor Lefkow added: “These results suggest that while there may be no benefit to taking Viagra for men in the UK for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, some men may benefit from the use of Viagra for men.”

It is a gel called Eroxon, and has been clinically proven to work for people with mild to severe erectile dysfunction.
Eroxon is made by Futura Medical, a pharmaceutical company based in the UK.
Eroxon is applied to the head of the penis, where the gel evaporates, with this evaporation stimulates vascular and neural nerve endings by rapidly cooling and warming the area. This triggers the release of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, therefore increasing blood flow to the penis and causing an erection.

These side effects mean people with pre-existing health conditions, such as heart and liver disease, cannot take oral ED pills. They are also not safe for people who have recently had a stroke, and cannot be taken with some prescription medicines.
Dr Hilary Jones, who regularly appears as a health expert on ITV, told: “The word ‘breakthrough’ is often used in health headlines, but new treatments which are truly groundbreaking come along far less frequently. Eroxon is an innovative therapy which has the potential to change the lives of millions of men with erectile dysfunction.”
Dr Catherine Hood, a sexual health specialist, added: “When they were launched back in the 90s, PDE5i medicines were a game-changer, but they are not an option for many men due to pre-existing health conditions, interactions with their prescription medicines or simply because of the time they take to work.”
In a 12-week clinical trial of 250 people, two out of three reported a significant improvement in their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. The figure rose to 80 per cent for those with severe erectile dysfuncion.
The gel is available over the counter, without a prescription. Eroxon costs £24.99 for a pack of four single-use tubes, and is available from Boots stores and online.
